In a soaking rain, the eventual Veteran’s Cup winner teed off early Saturday morning at Frinton GC. Despite the bad weather, Brian Little battled on and won the trophy with 37 stableford points. Players over the age of 60 were eligible.
In the simultaneous stableford, Nigel Jackson scored 40 points to win that event. Steve Powell, Jamie Hearn and Jeffrey Morgan all came in with 37 nett.
The ladies played for the Capel Court Rose Bowl on Tuesday, a medal with no handicap limit. Captain Yvonne Davies was out in front, winning it with 71 nett. Vice Captain Jemma Jackson followed in second place with her 72. And two ladies scored 74 nett, with Diane Morgan awarded second place on count back ahead of Mary Johnson.
Frinton’s Thornton Cup team, captained by Tig Tanner, played Romford at home last Sunday in the first round. Romford had a strong team with nine players scratch or better and one at +2.3. It was 2/3 at lunchtime with Nick Tedder-Ward/Darren Wells and Stuart Grimwade/Ed Glease winning in the morning foursomes. In the afternoon singles, Robert Trotman won his match and Nick Brown finished with a half. The final score was 3.5 -11.5 to Romford.
This coming weekend Frinton is hosting the Essex Ladies County Championship from Friday through Sunday.
